DUPR ratings explained
The 2.000 to 8.000 rating USA Pickleball and the pro tours now use: how it moves, how to get one, and whether you need it for open play.
By Albert Antioquia · Updated
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a pickleball rating from 2.000 to 8.000 that is worked out from your match results, not from a self-assessment. Every match has an expected result based on everyone’s ratings; if your team scores more points than expected, your rating goes up, and if it scores fewer, it goes down. Since December 2025 it has been the official rating for events owned by USA Pickleball. It is free to get one: your first recorded match starts your rating.
This guide explains how it works in practice, how a recreational player gets one, and how it differs from the USA Pickleball skill levels you see on open play signs. Source of truth: DUPR’s own how it works page.
How the rating moves
- Expected result. Before a match, DUPR predicts the outcome from the players’ ratings. In doubles, a team’s rating is the average of its two players.
- Points, not just wins. Beating a weaker team 11–9 can lower your rating if you were expected to win by more. Losing 9–11 to a stronger team can raise it.
- Recent matches count more than old ones.
- Verified matches count more than ones you post yourself. Club, league and tournament results entered by an organiser are verified.
DUPR does not publish its exact formula, so be wary of any article that claims to.
Reliability
Next to the rating, DUPR shows a reliability score from 1 to 100%. It rises as you play more matches against more people. A 3.5 with low reliability might really be a 3.2 or a 3.8; organisers who use DUPR for divisions often ask for a minimum reliability as well as a rating.
Separate ratings
You have separate ratings for singles and doubles, and for gender and mixed doubles, plus age-group ratings for older players. Your doubles rating says nothing about your singles game.
How to get a DUPR rating
- Create a free account in the DUPR app or on dupr.com. You start as NR (not rated).
- Record a match. You can post it yourself in the app, or play in a club session, league or tournament where the organiser submits results (those count as verified).
- One match gives you a rating; more matches make it reliable.
DUPR also offers ratings from certified coaches and video analysis partners, and a paid DUPR+ tier with extras. Check current options and prices in the app, as they change.

| DUPR | USA Pickleball skill levels | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A rating calculated from match results | Written descriptions plus a self-assessment |
| Scale | 2.000 to 8.000, three decimals | 1.0 to 5.5+, in half steps |
| Changes | After every recorded match | When you reassess yourself |
| Used for | Tournament divisions, club ladders, open play brackets | Choosing a session, rough self-placement |
| Official? | The rating for USA Pickleball-owned events since Dec 2025 | USA Pickleball says they are not official ratings |
Before DUPR, USA Pickleball used its own tournament rating (UTPR) and then UTR-P. If you see those on older pages, that is why.
What a number means on court
A rough, unofficial picture for open play: under 3.0 is learning the rules and consistency; 3.0 to 3.5 can rally and is learning the third shot and the kitchen game; 3.5 to 4.0 dinks with control and attacks high balls; 4.0+ plays a patient, tactical game with few unforced errors. These are our descriptions, not DUPR’s, and the same number can play differently from one region to another.
Do you need one for open play?
No. Most open play is self-rated, and a DUPR rating only matters where a venue splits courts by rating or runs rated events. What matters at open play is that games are even. If your group uses levels, the skill level guide covers how to make fair teams. Organising a rated event? See how to run a pickleball tournament.
